LaFayette Grover Who is Born in on November 29, 1823, in Bethel. Maine, son of John. a surgeon and among those who helped frame the constitution of Maine in 1819. and Fanny (Woodman) Grover. Brother of Abernethy.

Talleyrand. Cuvier and of two sisters who died early in life. Married to Elizabeth Carter in 1865 father of John Cuvier, a youth of twenty-three summers, so named after his grandfather and uncle, the sold offspring of this union, was educated at the Peekskill Military Academy, New York, and is now completing his studies in Europe. Educated at Gould's Academy in Bethel. and at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Maine. Studied law in Philadelphia and was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in March, 1850. In the autumn of that year, Grover sailed around Cape Horn to San Francisco. arriving in July, 1851.

He soon proceeded to Oregon. where he began a law practice in Salem. Served for six months as clerk of the United States District Court. resigning in 1852 to resume his law practice. Held rank of First Lieutenant in a company of volunteers which he had helped to recruit to fight in the Rogue River Indian War of l853-54. Appointed by the Department of the Interior to serve on a committee to assess losses sustained by white settlers in the Indian wars of 1853 and 1857. He was instrumental in the organization of the Willamette Woolen Manufacturing Company in Salem and supervised its growth as director of the company for fifteen years. He directed the completion of Salem Flouring Mills, which were the first exporters of Oregon flour to foreign ports.

Grover was elected Prosecuting Attorney of the Second Judicial District in Oregon in 1852; representative to the Territorial Legislature in 1853; reelected in 1855, and was Speaker of the House during the 1855-56 session; elected delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1857; chosen as the first representative of Oregon to the United States Congress, but served for only seventeen days until the conclusion of the 35th Congress in March, 1859. In 1870 Grover was the Democratic nominee for governor and was elected by a vote of 11,726 to 11,095 over his Republican opponent, Joel Palmer. Reelected Governor in 1874, holding office until 1877 when he resigned to become a United States Senator, having been chosen for that office by the Oregon Legislature in 1876. Throughout his career as governor and senator, Grover worked to exclude Chinese workers from Oregon and to modify the Burlingame Treaty of 1868, which encouraged Chinese immigration to the United States.

He supported the construction of locks at Willamette Falls in Oregon City, which, when completed, allowed river traffic from the lower to the upper Willamette and stimulated farm production by lowering freight rates. He promoted the organization of a state university. an agricultural college, and institutions for deaf mutes and the blind. Also the state capitol building and penitentiary were erected during his term of office. Grover served in the United States Senate from 1877 to 1883; he then retired to Portland, Oregon, where he sold real estate until his death on May 10, 1911.
